Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

P. T. Corbrick is our school mascot. She is a panda. Why the funky name? P = Principled T = Thinker C = Caring O = Open-Minded R = Risk-Taker B = Balanced R = Reflective I = Inquirer C = Communicator K = Knowledgeable

You see, our school, a K-8 Center in South Florida, is an 'International Baccalaureate World School'.

(Please do not let that fancy title fool you. We are classed as a 'Title 1' school. Most of our families have very low incomes.) The International Baccalaureate curriculum emphasizes character education. Specifically, it stresses the 10 character traits mentioned above. How do you get children to remember those characteristics? We came up with the idea of linking the characteristics to the school mascot. Our mascot is a panda. For several years, to be honest, nobody has paid the panda much attention. But now we have hit upon the idea of naming the mascot so that each letter of her name stands for one of those character traits. We are going to RELAUNCH the mascot! And THAT is where my students and I come in! I am the art teacher. I am working with my 5th grade students to create a powerpoint, featuring cute pictures of pandas, to show to every class in school.

My Project

This is how the powerpoint presentation will work. There will be different slides for each of the characteristics. For example, one of my 5th graders found a picture of a panda reading a book. We'll put that onto a slide with the caption 'K = Knowledgeable'. Another slide will feature a picture of a panda climbing a rope, with 'R = Risk Taker' written under it. 'So what?', you may ask. These days, schoolchildren are swamped with powerpoint presentations. What is going to make this one memorable? How is P.T. Corbrick going to stick in the children's heads? The answer is that, if this project is successful, she is going back to the classroom with the students! On Relaunch Day, I want to show the students' powerpoint to each grade level, one by one, on the big screen in the school conference center. (I am going to email the powerpoint to each of our school's teachers, so that they can, periodically, show it to their classes using their smartboards.) And at the end of the presentation...

My students and I will produce your gifts!

We want to give one stuffed panda - one 'P.T. Corbrick' - to every class in school. It will take 2 Donors Choose projects to supply each classroom in our very big school. THIS project should give us enough pandas for 3 grade levels. It will target 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade classrooms. My students and I want to make our new mascot really memorable. If we could give each class its own P.T. Corbrick, that would be fantastic!
