My Students

American Politician, Bob Ehrlich once said, "Some of the most important conversations I have ever had occurred at my family's dinner table." While I agree with the quote, I also believe that some of the most important conversations that occur at school are those where students are knee to knee or shoulder to shoulder on the group rug. First grade is a prime age for building the ability to speak and listen. Children love to be heard. They love the chance to talk in class and whole group time is the prime time for those conversations to happen. In my classroom, students from low income to middle class are encouraged to speak and listen with care on a daily basis. And at this age, they have a hunger to be heard. Their eyes light up and their minds engage when they speak to one another.

There is nothing more rewarding than getting to watch children gain confidence through active communication.

Through listening to one another, problems are solved, confidence is fed and you truly get to see what students know and understand.

My Project

For over a year now, we have been social distanced from each other. We have screens separating our desks, spots on the floor 6 feet apart, and markings all down the hallways telling us where to sit and stand.

With great anticipation, next year will hopefully look different.

We will get to have a rug in our room again! We will be able to have knee to knee conversations, turn and talks, back to backs and all of those other wonderful interactive talk moves and have it on a nice clean surface.
