My Project

My students are a thoughtful and creative group of fifth graders growing up in a rural town in the heart of Oklahoma. Our fifth graders are tasked with learning about the history of our country in a state who's history is much younger than our national ancestors. As a fifth grade student living in Oklahoma, it is sometimes difficult to connect with history that is drastically different from our modern-day culture. As a history teacher, it is my job to bring our national history to life for my students.

We are planning a Colonial Fair as a culminating activity this fall that will immerse students in Colonial Life and review key concepts learned during our unit of study.

As part of our social studies curriculum, my students study the Thirteen Original Colonies and the colonial way of life.

The students will be spending the day learning to cross stitch using an embroidery hoop, playing marbles and other colonial games, making tin art like a tinsmith & butter like a farmer, writing calligraphy using quill pens, and even decoding secret messages using a cypher wheel!

As a result of our Colonial Day Fair, students will be able to immerse themselves in kinesthetic activities that connect with their learning and deepen their understanding of daily life in the colonies. Students will also benefit socially by experiencing these activities together!
