My Students

Ask typical teenagers how motivated they'd be to read medieval literature in Spanish and my guess is that they'd drown out your question with modern lyrical thrashing on their iPods. How do I convince my students that picaresque literature's protagonists are snarky, dark, and smart like they are?

My Spanish 4 students are very motivated to learn Spanish.

I anticipate that many of them will choose to continue their language studies at the university level. Many of them will be the first in their families to study after high school. For this reason, I am exceptionally committed to exposing my students to university level literature and topics. Their skill levels vary widely but they are all very motivated to excel. It is a pleasure to teach these students!

My Project

"Lazarillo de Tormes" is a novel about a poor young urban rogue who travels around Spain and uses wit and trickery to survive. We are also in an urban environment in the largest city in PA where many of us are familiar with poverty and difficult family situations. Once my students get past the initial shock of learning that we'll be reading a 16th century novel, I am confident they will embrace the novel's endearing protagonist and find parallels between his life and their own. My students will graduate from this class having read one of the most important literary works in history and carrying its lessons into their future studies.

I would like to prepare my students for the rigor of university-level language courses.

This unit on 16th century literature is an excellent way to bridge high school level Spanish and college level Spanish. It is also a way for my students to overcome their fear of medieval literature through a highly entertaining story about a boy who is much like them.
