My Students

Every Monday and Friday morning, 25 students tumble into Room 428 ready to make something in Arts & Crafts club. I lay out materials on the front table; they choose what to do with them.

My school is made of students who do not have access to a lot of materials due to limited family income.

As the club leader for the Arts & Crafts club for the past year, I have seen how the students thrive in the act of making something with their own hands. My school is located in the middle of a ring of public housing projects in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Brooklyn. The students live in the midst of poverty, crime, and challenge. It is hard for them to concentrate on the work with some of the struggles in their lives.

My Project

The basis of Arts & Crafts club is that it is a student-directed club. The co-leader and I surveyed the students to find out what they most want to make and do in the club, and from that we determined this list of materials. One of my favorite things to do is to watch students poke through the materials available and come up with their own ideas of what to do. Students can't wait to get their hands on yarn and learn how to crochet. Many are very skilled at using felt, stuffing, thread, and needles to create small pillows, ornaments, and stuffed animals. They get twitchy when we run out of the needed materials. A small group of students wants to try their hand at drawing manga-style graphics. Thanks to donations from neighbors, I have a lot of fabric - with the addition of fabric markers, students will get to embellish the creations they make.

Donations to this project will enable a phenomenal group of students the chance to try new arts and crafts and to continue practicing old favorites.

The students benefit from increasing focus, persistence, positive social behaviors, and responsibility. As a teacher, I benefit from seeing how they handle set-backs and successes and from spending time with them engaged in non-academic work. All of this together adds up to improvement in the classroom.
