My Students

I teach an exciting, motivated, and creative group of fifth-grade students. My student population is very diverse. I have some who are working below grade level, while others need to extend their thinking and apply the skills they have mastered in meaningful ways.

My students enjoy coming to school each day and learning from each other.

They use their critical-thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They want to know about our community and how they can have a positive impact on it.

My Project

I want my students to gain media literacy skills as they learn to decipher nonfiction text. I am requesting National Geographic readers to help them do this. With these readers, my students will gain the media literacy skills necessary to decipher nonfiction text. They will become proficient at using photo captions, diagrams, and other non-fiction text features. They will also learn to cross check information by double checking their facts with online resources. I want to bring a spark to these books by adding Play-Doh TOUCH Shape to Life Studios to our classroom. Through the Touch Shape to Life Studio, students can use Play-Doh to recreate scenes from our nonfiction text, such as the underwater life that lives on coral reefs, the homes of whales, and the habitats of manatees, and then watch the creation come to life on screen, ready to explore.

This project will truly inspire my students' creativity, which is a vital component of critical thinking skills.

These critical thinking skills help them analyze text, determine what is real information and what is not. This project will help my students apply media literacy skills, be motivated to decipher text, and will definitely have them engaged with their learning.
