Media Literacy for the 21st Century

My students need 11 Chromebooks in order to create blogs as part of their media literacy unit. The Chromebooks will guide them in hands-on, exploratory learning that harnesses their own interests to build 21st century literacy skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves students in grades K-8 in Oakland and provides rigorous academics, quality teachers and a safe and supportive learning environment.. Our students and their families live in the middle of East Oakland, where high rates of poverty, gun violence, and drug use mean that our students face a multitude of obstacles on a daily basis in their pursuit of education. Despite the challenges that many of our students face, they are incredibly motivated to succeed, and our school is one of the highest performing middle schools in East Oakland. Many of our students come from Spanish speaking families, and over 30 percent are English Language Learners, which gives them a unique bilingual and multicultural perspective on their own education. Our goal is to prepare our students with skills necessary for success in high school and college.

The Life Skills class provides space for students to hone their creativity and critical thinking skills while engaging in hands on experiential activities, through meeting arts, reading and writing, social studies, and health standards.

This past year, students engaged in oral and written family storytelling, ran a full service kitchen as they critically studied food, spraypainted a mural, and analyzed media advertising.

My Project

Over 200 5th-8th grade students at my school in East Oakland will be able to access these chromebooks as they are guided through both elements of media literacy - understanding and making media. Students will create and maintain blogs about topics that they are experts in - and the chromebooks will be the tool with which students can harness their own knowledge to engage deeply in their own media creation. In the next unit of study, students will critically analyze the world of media advertising - and understand how and why advertisers communicate media messages to young people.

In addition to the media literacy unit, students will be able to use chromebooks for other projects in the Life Skills classroom: researching colleges, drafting high school application essays, completing research projects, all while building foundational 21st century literacy skills.

My students have limited time on chromebooks in their other classes (as the existing chromebooks in the school are shared between classrooms and grade levels, and are primarily used for standardized testing), and will not have access to technology in Life Skills. While many students have phones and are gifted in the world of social media, most lack the foundational online literacy skills that are required when technology is used for academic purposes in the classroom. Without access to technology, my students will miss an opportunity to develop the skills that will be essential to their success in high school and college: typing, searching, researching, critically reading information online, and safely connecting with others online. I want to prepare my students for the technology literacy gap that many of them will face in the transition to high school and college, and develop skills that they can use in their future academic success.
