Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a small middle school in Downtown Los Angeles, two blocks outside of Skid Row. Most students are from socioeconomically challenged communities and may be the first in their families to attend college some day. Some of my students have moved to the United States in the last few years, months, and weeks. Middle school is challenging enough without struggling with the language that the curriculum is taught in.

In order to develop English language skills, my students need to have access to relevant, interesting curriculum tools.

They have already been participating in current event presentations, but I want to move into a direction in which they are regularly reading relevant articles in order to practice reading skills, as well as developing media literacy skills by reading magazines.

My Project

Today's young people are growing up in a world where they are constantly bombarded with information, and it is increasingly more challenging to decide what information to take in and which to push away. Our society is constantly fighting over what is fact and what is fiction in a world where the truth is harder and harder to find and less likely to be believed when world leaders are spreading false information themselves.

I want to ensure that my English Learners (EL) are able to read, digest, and deliberate over information in the media.

In order to participate in society with confidence, young people need to learn how to read news articles in order to not only learn how to decode what is true in the media and what is false, but also learn how to discuss current events that may affect their lives.
