My Students

Recognized as a ”non-traditional academic haven for struggling students,” C. is distinguished by its curricular focus on experiential learning through internship. C. is built on the idea that all children learn differently, some learn by seeing some by hearing, others by doing. Education at CAS is individualized, helping young people to reach their full potential. We serve 600 students who have transferred from over 200 educational institutions from all over New York City and New York State. Often, these students are overage and under-credited with over 10 percent homeless, living in temporary shelters, or in foster care; safety transfers–students; young mothers and fathers utilizing on-campus childcare services; and teens leaving residential psychiatric facilities and correctional facilities. CAS helps provide a diverse group of committed interns to businesses, health centers, and organizations across all five boroughs, breaking down barriers and prejudices against the city's hardest-to-reach young people while providing them with real-world skills to help jumpstart their future.

My Project

Over the last forty years, C. has become an internationally-recognized leader for its innovative experiential-based education model. Early on, CAS identified the importance of the media and creative arts as a career pathway for its students in addition to arts education being crucial for cognitive and social-emotional development. Now, these industries and pedagogical practices have become even more omnipresent and influential in young people’s lives, and the digital technologies to produce and engage with media have become far more accessible. Moreover, this creative skill set promoted by CAS through its partnership with creative industry partners- often described now as 21st Century Literacy – has become central to the definition of a high-quality education, career readiness and active citizenship. Ben will lead sessions with student to explore what it means to create music, art and media as a tool for social engagement and justice in multiple ways--creatively, professionally, personally, and spiritually. Topics include: refining your craft; knowing yourself, your history, your medium, your materials and the history of your craft; applying all knowledge and areas of interest and intrigue into your craft; and, collaborating within a community; being an informed and active member of society with strong media literacy skills. Students will develop the skills to become creators and producers of their own intellectual property and content in the music industry, allowing them to be conscious participants in the global market and to fully engage themselves in the making change in the world by harnessing the power of media and music.
