My Project

Middle schoolers are boundless in their creative expressions and also beginning their quest to understand who they really are as they step out of childhood towards their new teenage self. These two ideas have inspired my newest 7th grade media arts elective course. Though, I am primarily a 7th grade American History teacher, I will also be offering a new elective this year with a focus on creating and exhibiting student art centered around a larger theme of personal identity. With a student body of 1,200 students our school community faces challenges in programming and equal access to the arts, so I would like to offer my students more arts opportunities. I have witnessed so many of my students have a strong interest in the visual arts but year after year are denied the right to develop skills and create art during the school day.

Students thrive when they are given chances to experiment with art making, in previous years we have explored book making, block printing and watercolor technique and it has been some of my most rewarding time with students.

To support my media arts elective course I am seeking art materials for my first semester identity project in which students will create a mixed media representation of their own identity using photography, word and print and acrylic paint. This project will allow students to practice art technique like collage, painting with acrylic and the design process, but more importantly push them to think about internal and external aspect of their personal identity. This will foster our class community to have discussions centered around issues of identity, culture, family, diversity and allow the students to learn more about each other.
