My Students

My boss instructs me to have my students write, write, write, and when they're finished, have them write again! I teach junior high Social Studies in a small rural district in southwest Mississippi. Unfortunately, school supplies are not high on the priority list of many families in my district.

Let's be honest - we're talking junior high students here.

Giving supply lists to mother and then actually bringing supplies like pencil and paper to school on a daily basis is not high on their "to do" list. The makeup and cologne is usually packed into the book bag first! A lack of supplies is not an acceptable excuse for not learning to effectively practice their first amendment rights, however. I stress to my students that they need to be able to express themselves in writing in a clear, concise, and grammatically correct manner. That's hard to do when you don't have a pencil to write with!

My Project

I am asking for a supply of 50 mechanical pencils. While a traditional wooden pencil would get the job done, we are talking about junior high students. Most would, like, rather have a pimple, like, on their noses than be, like, caught dead with an "old-fashioned pencil." Mechanical pencils are way cool, and at this age, the "coolness" factor outweighs just about everything. With a socially acceptable (by junior high standards) writing utensil in hand, my students will have no excuse for not writing, writing, and writing some more.

Practice makes perfect, and having the materials on available to facilitate practice makes life a little less stressful, and improves the educational achievement of everyone across the board.
