Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Reluctant readers need access to high interest books to get them hooked on reading! I want to inspire my students to read for the fun of it! Currently, I teach Language Arts to approximately 100 sixth grade middle school students and over half of my students are males. Research shows that boys enjoy nonfiction texts, while girls tend to select fiction books. My classroom library is stocked full of fiction but is limited in the amount of nonfiction books that would appeal to my male students.

Reading nonfiction is a great way for students to build background knowledge needed to understand concepts across the different content areas. This is especially true for struggling readers of all backgrounds. Students who have limited experiences will be able to connect to the curriculum in a way that was not previously possible.

Students can increase their comprehension by incorporating the various reading strategies as they question the text, make connections, determine importance, summarize, infer, and visualize. Additionally, nonfiction texts assist students in the acquisition of new vocabulary words.

High interest nonfiction books are a great way to get students motivated to read! Your donation benefits our community, school, and my students on an on-going basis, because the books I need for my classroom can be continually used for many years to come. Your support will help to put books into the hands of children that need to experience the joy of reading. Thank you!
