This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The project in particular that I'm requesting this equipment for is to measure the forces acting on their trusses. Trusses are triangular parts of a structure using joints and members strategically to distribute the forces in the best manner. The LabQuest 3 is the interface that is needed in order to use the force sensors to make those measurements. Though I'm asking for the funds for this particular project there are other projects during the year that require students to measure forces so this equipment will be used multiple times over the years.

My students are imaginative when designing their projects.

They base their designs on science and engineering concepts. In order to truly prepare for future careers, they also need to test their designs, analyze the results and then redesign to improve them. After constructing their trusses from balsa wood, they apply a force until it breaks. The force sensor measures it and the LabQuest 3 records the force applied over time. It's very important that students record in their engineering notebook where their design first broke. Next they find the forces acting on each member of their truss. This analysis provides students the needed information to design a better truss!

This equipment provides the testing phase of the project and is very similar to sensors that are actually used in industry. This experience with real world technology is vital to my students success in a STEM career. Help them dream of a future they never thought possible! Help them consider a path in a high skill, high wage and high demand career that STEM can offer.
