Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school is located in an inner-city area, with a student population of over 900 children and is 98% Hispanic. It is a Title 1 school (90% or more receive free or reduced lunch)in a neighborhood where children have few opportunities to experience Science concepts outside the classroom. Triple beam balances will have an immediate impact on our 5th grade students. Our fifth grade students take the TAKS test in Science, which allows them to show how much they have learned throughout their elementary school years. The children have had experiences with pan balances, however we do not have enough triple beam balances to provide the practice they need with more refined measurement concepts. Since we have only a few of these tools, they must be shared between 12 classes of 4th and 5th grade. Having triple beam balances in the 5th grade Science lab will allow us to use this important tool for every lab experience.
