My Students

My students are budding scientists and hands on learners. We love to explore, experiment, and create in our classroom. My students are struggling with metric and customary measurement, because it is a concept that requires concrete exploration, and we lack the tools needed to explore measurement.

I work at a Charter School that focuses on the Arts and Sciences.

In addition to meeting our city's public school requirements, we are also trying to push past the baseline learning and allow students the opportunity to imagine, explore, and create. My students live in an urban environment and apply to come to our school instead of their city zone school. We encourage field trips, outside learning, and alternative methods. Our students are hands-on, eager learners.

My Project

The materials I've requested will be used during centers, learning stations, and lab days to measure and explore the physical properties of matter. In addition to helping our 4th and 5th grade students, I will also make these items available to the rest of the school, seeing that these are materials that no one in our school has access to. Mass, volume and especially density are challenging concepts. Students need to be able touch and measure actual objects to develop their concrete understanding of units, so they can then apply it to abstract questions.

These resources are desperately needed at our school.

Students of all ages for years to come will be able to explore measurement in math and science and develop a deeper understanding of mass and volume. Measurement is important in many careers as well as every day life. These skills will help them as they move through their educational career and in their daily lives.
