My Students

We are a sixth grade team of 78 students in suburban Pittsburgh, PA. Our school houses grades 4-6 and has about 1,000 students. The sixth grade students love being the big fish in the small pond for a year before officially becoming middle schoolers. Everyone was excited to officially open the school's new STEAM room, Compass Studio, this past fall. The STEAM concepts will also be integrated into many classroom lessons and activities. We love to read, problem solve and collaborate. We take pride in our learning and work hard to prepare for the future.

My Project

It is my first year teaching 6th grade Science. I am learning some new content just as my students are. When we recently started a short unit on Matter, I discovered that we did not have adequate materials for students to use to weigh and measure.

My students need new balances and a scale to make the concept of mass and weight come alive.

Adding new balances and a digital scale to our Science classroom will help students to see firsthand how objects can have their own unique masses. Knowing an object’s mass will then lead to further discussion about the properties of mass, weight, volume, and density.

The hands-on aspect of using the scale and balance will help all students connect more with the concept than just reading about it in a book, watching a video, or having a classroom discussion. Thank you for enriching our learning!
