My Students

I love these students. They are hardworking and goofy, socially active and optimistic, loving and strong-willed. This is a monolingual inclusion classroom, which means I teach in English and some students have special needs. We have artists, musicians, creators, and critics in this class, and these skills overpower any physical, learning, or behavioral challenges that students face.

As a class, we focus on how race and power affect our lives and the world.

The racial breakdown of this year's group is complicated--mostly because race is "made-up" as we say. That does not diminish its importance though. Just over half of the class identifies as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) or multiracial. Multiple students speak other languages at home, and many others live with adults who speak other languages but only speak English with their children.

Above all, this group is curious. I work hard to not only encourage their curiosity but create space for it daily. These are the kids who will drive future teachers and professors crazy because they ask so many questions, and I'm fine with that.

My Project

Teaching about race and power goes deeper than just black and white ... copies. I am committed to engaging students in discussion, debate, and learning about race and power in every subject we teach. Our district has one color printer in the district office building; there is no color printer in the school. Having a color printer that I can access regularly would greatly impact students by color-coding to help with executive functioning; teaching about physical science to better understand energy, energy consumption, and our changing world; and bringing activists to life in the classroom.

Nine- and ten-year-old brains grow greatly during the school year--especially the prefrontal cortex.

Therefore I teach students how to organize their thoughts through systems and color-coding. We use colors annotate, highlight, and organize not only papers but ideas. These skills and strategies are especially important for English Learners, so also adding color to handouts would help with organizing.

In our science and social studies units, we study how the Grand Canyon changed over time, apply concepts of energy transfer to create green technology, learn about indigenous Americans. Not only can color handouts bring these concepts to life, but the printer itself can be an object to discuss energy consumption and reduction. Maps can be in color to show how land and borders change over time. These subjects are so important, but the information gets muddied with poorly copied resources.

Finally, I bring social activists and musicians who are BIPOC into the classroom daily. Each week features a relevant quote by a BIPOC musician. Our table groups are not "red circle" or "yellow star" but Lin-Manuel Miranda and Amara La Negra. The color printer would bring these images to life in a way that helps us focus on race and power.
