My Students

Our school is made up of first-generation students whose parents came to our country for opportunity and the American Dream. Prioritizing needs becomes imperative for these families and hair care often gets placed to the side. Within the last couple of years, my role as a school counselor has changed dramatically.

Social-emotional concerns have made its way to the forefront of our responsibilities.

Due to the increase of single-parent households, many of our students come in asking for assistance and advice from the school staff on how to care for hair and appearance. In counseling, we teach our students how to maintain their changing bodies, to care for their hair and skin, and various ways to create new and easy hairstyles. We are constantly observing that when students feel better about their appearance, they feel better about themselves and are performing better inside and outside of the classroom.

My Project

Appearance is important at every age, but especially during the teenage years. When we feel better about our appearance, our self-esteem increases. When our self-esteem increases we are more likely to take smart risks, make better choices, and stay away from negative influences.

The products we are requesting will help the counseling office teach our students how to care for their hair, skin, and themselves.

In the end, our overall goal is to increase the social-emotional standing of each student in our school.

A PTA meeting will also be held on teaching any parent who is interested in how to maintain hair care and answer any questions they may have.
