My Students

Our school is one of a few schools in New York City where students can earn both a high school diploma and an associate of arts degree in Liberal Arts Studies. Our students are highly motivated enthusiastic about learning with a sincere desire to learn at deeper and higher levels.

These highly motivated enthusiastic learners come from ethnically, racially and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.

Our early college program promotes the idea that motivated younger students are able to handle college level work.

My Project

Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink! In this case its good thing! Science, particularly chemistry has earned the label of “being difficult” amongst students. Often times when a subject is labelled as “being difficult” it presents a challenge to get students engaged in the subject matter. As science teacher I am always looking for new and innovative ways to present chemistry in manner that student find engaging, fun and interesting. The study of water molecules and their interactions with each other, other compounds and biological systems is a key idea in high school chemistry and biology that students often struggle with. Using modeling kits, the students are able to convert a two-dimensional representation of a molecule into three dimensions. They can also carry out a particular manipulation of the molecule, see how monomers form polymers and vice versa. Using three-dimensional modeling kits, help students become more familiar with the structures, which ultimately helps with the understanding of how these structures contribute to the versatility of molecules that make cellular processes possible. This year to address this struggle and to better in engage students, the chemistry and biology faculty would like your help! We are looking to purchase 3- class sets of the Water Kit from 3-D Molecular Designs these amazing kits allow us to physically demonstrate molecular interaction to students and they will allow for students see and feel the forces for themselves! We are looking to purchase 36-kits, which allows 18-student pairs to physically see important interactions of water molecules.
