My Project

Our students will celebrate Kaua'i this May Day with a vibrant hula performance. Lole (costumes) and lei are vital to authentic Hawaiian dance, reflecting the stories and traditions students have learned. We enrich this experience by engaging in hana no'eau (traditional Hawaiian arts). Students will learn natural dyeing, stamping, and lei making, transforming materials into cultural expressions.

Specifically, we will dye, stamp, and print fabric using traditional Hawaiian motifs and dyes, alongside modern designs and techniques, to create contemporary attire inspired by traditional practices.

Students will also create plant portraits of the native plants they are studying, propagating, dancing, and chanting about. Abstract designs of these native plants will be stamped onto the material, which will be crafted into skirts and capes. These hands-on activities will create authentic lole and lei, building an inventory for future cultural events and deepening our students 'ike Hawaii (Hawaiian knowledge).

These costumes are more than attire; they're a testament to student effort, cherished memories, and a resource for preserving cultural skills. Your support will provide fabric, dyes, tools, flowers, and foliage, empowering students to fully express their learning. By investing in these materials, you invest in cultural preservation, allowing students to connect with their heritage and share Kaua'i's beauty. Mahalo nui loa for your support.
