My Students

My students walk into our classroom each and everyday ready to learn. They are full of life and excited and ready to fill their minds with new and wonderful things. They especially love to read and explore all the educational materials on the internet. Many of my students like to read only one genre of text. They are not exposed to all that is available. My students are from low income families. They receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status as a matter of fact 95% of our student population receives free lunch, we are a Title 1 Public School. As soon as they enter the classroom, they ask who gets to go on the computer?

Did you get any new books?

Many of my students do not have computers or books at home. Our classroom, their home away from home is the only place they get to learn and enjoy these things. I may not be able to control what happens at home, however, I can certainly try to provide these things for them at school.

My Project

My students need nonfiction texts to complete our new classroom library. We were fortunate enough to have donated many fiction texts. These nonfiction texts will help my students explore the "real" world. These will help with classroom projects, homework and just plain old learning that there are other genres out there. Books can be fun and educational at the same time. Many of my students will not even consider reading a book that doesn't look fun. I try to teach them that nonfiction/informational texts are fun too.

We will be creating nonfiction texts of our own soon and these books will be a valuable resource.

So many of my students think the only nonfiction text are textbooks. The laptop will benefit my class by allowing my students to learn to find resources for reports, type their work and search for educational games that will help them improve their math, reading and writing skills. Our class goal is to have at least 1 laptop for every 2 students. This puts a smile on their face.
