My Students

We will be studying Night, by Elie Wiesel, and although the novel is short, Holocaust literature demands a unit rich in media resources and a variety of engaging readings that will help students engage and make connections. We will be focusing on the issues of dehumanization and humanization.

My English 10 and Reading Strategies students are a diverse and hard-working group.

They are at least three years behind in their reading level, and some are learning English as a second language. Most of them are from economically disadvantaged families, and have had very few quality reading experiences outside of school. I want my students to see the interconnectedness of human stories and to be motivated to read. I want them to be exposed to different genres and forms of writing, and to discover why knowing more about the world empowers them to create both a better life for themselves and a better world for others. They know that in terms of standardized state graduation exams they are at a disadvantage, and they are coming to understand the advantages that will be available to them later in life if they can become better readers. Many of them work very hard on a daily basis. They deserve the best materials and support.

My Project

In language arts in our district, we have an anchor text each quarter around which to build the rest of our curriculum. 3rd quarter, our new anchor text is Night, by Elie Wiesel, his memoir about the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust. Although we have plenty of copies of Night, we do not have many other supplemental texts. In the past, I have used the graphic novel Maus alongside Night. It is a complex text, offers many angles for analysis, and has many similar themes as Night. Both stories ask students to consider the role of history in people's lives, as well as the idea of dehumanization (and humanization) on multiple levels. As a graphic novel, it engages students and opens up conversations about reading visual text as well. Many reading experiences and media messages students experience will include strong elements of visual communication, and I believe that is an important aspect of being a literate citizen today.

We can only motivate students to care about human rights by helping them imagine the times and places in the world when they have been disregarded, and to help students make connections to their own lives and experiences.

This project will provide students with an engaging read and help me work with them toward a better future.
