We want to WORM our way into becoming ecologically aware citizens. I am a K-5 science teacher at an elementary school. All classrooms at our school come to visit the science lab once a week for science enrichment and hands-on science learning. Our school serves a diverse population of students: neighborhood children, a large number of military families, and students who travel from lower socioeconomic areas of the city to attend our school.

Our science lab is striving to make students aware of our environmental impact on earth. Students will be studying the process of decomposition. We will also be studying lifecycles, habitats, and the roll of decomposers in the ecosystem. This has been a very slow-moving project, as we have little funding for more than the bare-bones supplies to regular classroom teachers. The science lab is need of updated and more engaging equipment and hands-on materials. The worm composting activity is fairly low-cost, easy to maintain, and provides meaningful learning opportunities for multiple grade levels and our school community.

In order to get our project started, we need materials for one small-scale worm composting bin for the classroom and one large-scale worm composting bin that can be contributed to by the students from their lunch leftovers.

Your help will ensure that students will develop awareness of the impact of humans on the environment.
