My Students

When an author comes to visit our students, they get a personal experience, an unparalleled understanding of reading and writing and begin to grasp the process of writing and publishing firsthand. Matt has offered to come to our school free of charge if we can raise the money for some books!

The 9th grade students of Harbor School hail from 5 boroughs and come from all walks of life.

The majority of our students start high school at or below reading level and access to these high interest books and the accompanying author visit will get set them on course for a life of reading and enjoying literature in a personal way.

My Project

Students will have access to the books to participate in book club/literature circles in their 9th grade English class. After reading the book, students will meet the author and participate in a writer's workshop with the author. These books will become part of our lending library so that future generations of students can also access the books.

This project will make a difference because the author himself has agreed to come to the school if we can fund the purchase of these books.

Our students are excited to meet a real, live published author and this kind of experience could be pivotal in their development as readers and writers.
