A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Students in our classroom come from many types of homes. Our school is placed on the outside of a major city. We are the oldest school in our district, the smallest, and the one who seems to always get the bad reputation that has been layered on for many decades. However, my kids love their school and their friends. This is their home. They have a zest for life! Their smiles are contagious. We are a family no matter what. That is the environment we create together in my class so that we can deal and get away from the harsh realities of home. My students deserve all of the essential tools to learn just as others do. We are a Title 1 campus which means almost all of my students require free or reduced lunch assistance.
My Project
My students need engaging manipulatives in order to visualize math as more than just problems on paper. I want my students to see math as a useful skill in the real world. By using more visual tools they can manipulate with their hands, I feel as though they will better grasp concepts like counting coins and numbers. Worksheets cannot bring math to live like these tools can. Students will use these materials in small guided groups, centers, or when I can model whole group. Dry erase boards are a great way to workout problems and share strategies. Also, my students love getting to use tools other than paper and pencil.
