Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The resource I would like to have for my students is an in-class mathematics library. The library I saw that would best meet the needs of my students is the Marilyn Burns library by Scholastic. I have found that it is much harder to begin to teach mathematics content when you delve right in to it. I firmly believe that having students participate in a read-aloud, where the teacher reads a book related to the content that will be learned, the students take notes and then discuss what they read has a longer lasting effect on what the students will understand in later lessons has a lasting effect on them. I tried this last school year and the essays the students wrote were absolutely outstanding. When we began the actual content, the students worked harder and smarter and were able to continuously go back to the specific details in the book and relate them to where we were doing in the later lessons. These read-alouds really helped the students understand the basics of the content being taught and it also helped them see that mathematics is not just formulas and shapes. Mathematics can be fun and my students saw the link between it and other content areas.
