Mathematics Can Be Beautiful!

Help me give my students colored pencils and graph paper so they can show their thinking during Math instruction. Using color will help students share their problem-solving strategies.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first grade students are resilient. Many of them have experienced trauma as a result of the pandemic and yet most still show up to classes on ZOOM. During the course of the year students have learned to acknowledge their feelings and find productive ways to express them. They have also learned how to use technology to access online learning as well as independent learning.

They attend an inner city school in Southern California.

Most students come from families with limited resources and limited formal education. Before the pandemic our school budget was already limited. The pandemic has brought these inequities to the fore front. Despite this, students enjoy school and having fun while learning.

My Project

My students are excited about Math and have learned how to persevere through challenging problems. However they sometimes get confused when trying to organize their thoughts or explain their solutions. The use of color would help them do this and make their work more accessible to their peers. Students will be able to underline important information when reading word problems. They can draw diagrams and use color to make them come to life.

The stylus will help me note their ideas using my iPad during Number Talk and Mathematician's Chair.

In this way students can compare and contrast solutions and learn from each other. Once recorded I can easily post their solutions and students can use them as a reference. Also students can upload their solutions and I can use the stylus to highlight key parts of their solution while they are explaining it to their peers.

The graph paper will also help students to attend to precision and to map out their solutions. With the help of these materials students mathematical thinking will be in color.
