My Project

I believe that learning mathematics should go beyond the traditional focus on crunching numbers and memorizing equations. Our high school is a diverse school of talented scholar-artists that deserve to see math come to life through art, music, dance, theater, and more. My goal as a second-year teacher is to build a classroom that highlights the strengths of my students and allows them to build confidence in their identities as mathematicians and artists.

I plan on using the poster paper and graph paper for various activities throughout the year that focus on the interactive visualization and presentation of mathematical ideas.

For example, students in my AP Precalculus class will learn about vectors by creating and playing through a mini-golf course made of popsicle sticks on the poster paper. Not only will students get to engage in mathematics in an interactive and collaborative way, but they will build confidence and self-esteem as their own work gets displayed around the classroom. The creative nature of our activities means that the classroom is bound to get messy, so it would be very helpful to have a set of paper towels on hand for clean-up.
