My Students

Did you ever wonder why you were learning all of those mathematical proofs, simultaneous linear equations, and trig functions in math class? My students do too. Allow them to learn about the importance of math in the world as they read texts about the role mathematics plays in our society.

My students are from poverty stricken communities.

Some live in shelters, others live in the projects, many are the primary caregiver for younger siblings, and others wonder where their next meal is coming from. Despite these hardships, my students come to math class each day motivated to learn and to create a better lives for themselves. They are smart and hard working individuals who do not dwell on the negative but instead try to make all of the right choices to ensure they have a bright future. The 96 students I will be teaching next year are taking two years worth of math instruction in one year. These bright individuals will not only master eight grade concepts but also strive to pass the NYS Regents exam in Integrated Algebra so they are a year ahead in high school mathematics.

My Project

Have you ever sat through math class half asleep wondering when you were ever going to use this stuff? I know I have - but that is the exact feeling I do not want my students to have. With these books, students can answer everyday questions that they have wondered about using the mathematics they will be learning in class. For example, why does it always seem that buses come in threes? What its the best way to tie a knot? How are the tall buildings in Manhattan built? For our country to flourish we need to be cultivating young minds to have the desire to question things around them and understand the mathematics behind technology, business, and science. These resources will further the understanding and curiosity of a high level student. Struggling students who need a mental break can calm themselves down while reading a lower level text while still learning at the same time. Math is more than numbers - please donate to allow my students to experience this for themselves.

Allow students to find the answers to why math is useful on their own.

By donating to this project, you will be giving resources to underprivileged students so they can further understand when they are going to use the mathematics concepts they learn in the classroom.
