Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is made up of diligent, inspiring, and creative fourth graders with big hearts and analytical minds. They attend school every day with purpose and a desire to learn something new, to discuss what they think, and take pride in their efforts.

My students learn in a bilingual community with a high level of family support.

They attend our school with growing technology opportunities that enhance their approach, application, and articulation of their knowledge and their new learning. We balance this with creativity and physical opportunities with that support the development of persistence, teamwork, and determination.

My Project

My students spend a great deal of time learning and applying new math concepts, using academic math vocabulary, talking through multi-step word problems, math procedures, problem solving strategy choices, and reflecting on their growing understandings. Their basic knowledge of numbers and operation skills need to be developed with automaticity so that students can focus their attention on the rigorous problem solving and critical thinking expected in their curriculum now and for years to come.

However, my students need more practice with making math facts fluent and automated. One way to support this effort is to provide opportunities to play fun, collaborative math games. These math games will allow my fourth grade mathematicians to be engaged in practicing their math skills and concepts consistently, efficiently, and with fluency. Playing the dice games and various card games will allow them to practice their fluency with multiplication, division, place value and fractions in a fun, entertaining, and friendly manner. The 'Smath game will allow them to use multiple operations and make many connections with numbers. The math folder games will reinforce their content knowledge.

My students will look forward to playing games that benefit their math skill, strategy, and fluency. The resources requested will encourage students to practice in a focused manner and with a positive attitude. Using these fast-paced games will support their progress in applying their basic skills to challenging math concepts, develop their mental math and reinforce their growing understandings.
