Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a 4th grade math classroom. There are a total of three classes that circulate through my room each day. I want to offer my students the opportunity to have fun while learning math. Students need to learn through engaging, hands-on activities and also to be able to make mistakes!

My students come from the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.

They are hardworking kids who eagerly seek attention and support. Although my students have it in them to be geniuses, they struggle with having confidence in their ability to succeed. Many of my students struggle in persevering through challenges and often think that it's because they are "bad" at math. They often lack motivation and quit the moment things get tough. One of the challenges I face with my students is in getting them to push through tough problems and in being accountable learners. I challenge my students to question each other, to look for ways to prove their answers, and to use their knowledge of the world around them to help them be better problem solvers. I want my students to be comfortable making mistakes but to never be comfortable giving up.

My Project

This year, I would like to try the "Math Workshop with Guided Instruction" approach. This will allow students to receive the same support in math that they receive in guided reading. My students need math game bingo to help with their fluency, flashcards to help with memorization, Meet the Common Core Math Standards Learning Center for our centers, magnetic base ten set, number lines, and foam dice. Students will work in four different stations throughout the week. These stations are; math facts, at your seat, teacher's choice and hands on. Students will have the opportunity to explore different math content through engaging and hands-on activities. I will have the opportunity to teach students of different learning abilities and levels in small groups. This will help me manage and track my students' learning. This will also help students with confidence because they will be receiving more small group instruction and support.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom by giving students the resources they need to begin to believe in themselves and their ability to be problem solvers.

Students will see that MATH CAN BE FUN and MATH CAN BE FOR EVERYONE!
