My Project

Jung, Brown, Karp (2014) state that when students are able to explore mathematics with manipulatives, they have a higher percentage of mastering number sense and will gain more knowledge from utilizing the materials. Manipulatives help students visualize and manipulate mathematical concepts.

To assist our young learners in growing as mathematicians, we have created Math Buddies, a program in which 4th and 5th grade students mentor Kindergarten and 1st graders by playing math games with them weekly.

Through peer tutoring the mathematic skillset of the mentor and mentee is improved. When students learn with their peers, they can see new processes for answering questions and come up with creative, collaborative solutions. Importantly, they will carry these new perspectives, as well as a willingness to seek and accept feedback, with them as they progress in their education. This experience also showcases the importance of community service for students.

This project is for materials that the Math Buddies will use during their sessions.
