Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second graders are positive, thoughtful, and enthusiastic about their learning. This group of eight-year-olds had been able to maintain and develop strong relationships with each other in spite of only being able to interact with each other during their Zoom class. They enjoy our daily morning check-ins, reading with each other, and sharing with each other their special projects and drawing skills.

My students, just like the community around us, have different abilities, experiences, and needs.

However, they all show great enthusiasm for learning and perseverance when they experience difficulty with a concept or skill. Second graders are impressive! They have developed the technological skills to use digital drawing tools, navigate and utilize apps to access information and share their thinking.

My Project

Under normal circumstances my students would be counting many different collections of objects. Counting objects, making groups, and representing addition/subtraction with objects are some of the most important experiences second graders engage in to help them understand numbers and place value. My students need to have Rekenreks and Unifix cubes to count and represent numbers during Distance Learning.

These manipulatives will allow me to differentiate math instruction to meet my students' needs.

Some of my students are practicing counting in sequence, others are practicing composing and decomposing numbers, and others are practicing explaining the math they do mentally. Rekenreks and Unifix cubes will provide the hands on experiences and visuals my students need to represent and make sense of numbers.
