Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Looking for inspiration? Our highly at-risk students face huge obstacles, challenges, and responsibilities. Yet they come to school every day in an effort to earn their high school diploma, hoping for a better life.

Our school's mission is to provide a second chance for youths to graduate from high school.

Most of our students have dropped out of other traditional or alternative schools at least once. Over half of our students have children or are expecting a child. Our students struggle with math! To make the subject more meaningful, they need mathematical experiences that go beyond lecture and worksheets. Giving our students memorable and interesting hands-on experiences results in deeper mathematical understanding and more insight into connections between math and real-life.

My Project

For this project we need origami paper to continue exploring the geometric properties of angles, lines, polygons, perimeter, area, similarity, congruence and symmetry. Already our students have made beautiful Octagon Stars, cubes, stellated octahedrons, and dodecahedrons and investigated their mathematical properties. Using origami to teach Geometry has been so successful that our students want to learn more. They keep asking for additional paper and projects. Best of all, our students learn not only Geometry through their origami work, but patience, perseverance, and the pride of accomplishment as well. These traits will help our students through high school, college and beyond.

With your generosity you will give our at-risk students an educational experience through hands-on geometric origami that will deepen their understanding of mathematics, help them graduate from high school, and bring them one step closer to success in college!
