My students need 6 pattern block sets, 40 hundred boards and 1 activity book, 10 geoboards, 2 decimal chip sets, and 8 sets of fraction dice to reinforce math concepts.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Confucius said "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." Nowhere is this quote more applicable than in a math classroom. My students hear and do lots of things in math, but we are lacking materials to truly allow them to experience the concepts they are learning.
I teach 5th grade math in an inner-city charter middle school in a high-need area.
Over 90% of our students qualify for free lunch according to their household incomes. My students enter 5th grade with widely varying previous experiences. Some were in challenging academic environments, but most enter 5th grade well below grade level.
My Project
Math manipulatives help make concepts concrete for students and allow them to make connections between numbers and their deeper meaning. Geoboards allow students to physically feel concepts such as shapes, perimeter, area, and geometrical transformations. Base-ten blocks make clear the connection between whole number and decimal place value. Pattern blocks and fraction dice allow students to experiment and explore fractions and fraction operations. Finally, hundred boards help students build number sense and practice mental math while building conceptual understanding.
Your support will help me foster a real conceptual understanding in my students through your contribution to this project.
By making abstract concepts concrete, students are able to understand math on a deeper level. In building this greater understanding, they will have a rock solid foundation to build upon in the rest of middle school, high school, and (of course) college!
