My Students

My students are a unique bunch. I have around twenty six to eight year olds in first grade in Frayser, an impoverished, disenfranchised community within Memphis, Tennessee. As a first year teacher, I have had a challenge in reaching my diverse students, as 1/3 failed kindergarten but continued to first grade, 1/3 failed first grade last year and are repeating, and 1/3 are on grade level.

They are a sweet, smart group with such a great desire to learn.

That in itself is great, as the school I work in is considered to be in the bottom five percent in the state of Tennessee. It is the Achievement School District's goal to move these schools directly from the bottom five percent to the top twenty-five percent. This challenge requires hard work, smart work, and great love.

My Project

These materials would greatly help my first graders! I plan to use the lap boards and Expo markers during whole group instructional time so that I can discover which students need differentiated instruction, whether it is accommodations or additional challenges. I want them to learn math the "write" way... I want to see the way their minds work, and I believe individual white boards is a great way to do this.

Rulers are a necessity for my measurement unit.

As a teacher at a state-run turn-around school, I have not received any funding for classroom supplies. Therefore, I am calling on you, generous donors, to provide my students in need for what they must have to succeed.

Katie Cubes are a great way for students to visualize math, which I find to be the biggest struggle for my little ones. I hope to use these Katie Cubes both in centers and in whole-group instruction, hence the large quantity, so that my students may not simply "do" math, they may SEE math!
