My students need two notebooks that will be used in lieu of a text book. We also use white boards for checks for understandings and independent practice.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title 1 college prep charter school in Northeast Las Vegas. My students and their families are hard-working, tenacious, and willing to do everything in order to succeed. The majority of my students are on free or reduced lunch, are ELLs, and have aspirations to be the first in their families to attend college. Unfortunately, we do not have the funds to provide students with all the necessary supplies to help them succeed. I will be teaching a pre-algebra class next year.
In my math class we will use interactive notebooks to learn and work through the complex standards.
These notebooks have allowed my students to take ownership of their math learning in a way that I have not seen with traditional math notebooks. However, the cost of supplies to maintain these notebooks gets pretty high, especially at the beginning of the year. This project will help me get everything I need to teach my students to the best of my abilities.
My Project
These notebooks are used in lieu of textbooks as we do not have math textbooks at our school. Students cut and paste different worksheets and materials into the notebooks. They use the notebooks to study and prepare for exams. I have former students that keep their notebooks to use for future math classes.
Whiteboards are an essential tool in the math classroom.
Students are able to use them for partner work and independent practice. Whiteboard work helps increase engagement in tasks as it is an exciting change of modality. We currently do not have any whiteboards for our classroom and students will greatly benefit from their use.
