Math Students Needs Mental Health Days Too!

Help me give my students food to nourish their brains so that they can succeed at school. Help me give my students basic art and journaling supplies so they can enjoy high-quality markers to create beautiful things.

My Project

I requested a mixture of food and art supplies for my math classroom. Every month, my students have a goal that they must reach by the end of the month to stay in good standing at our alternative school. The end of the month is a stressful time for students because they are trying to meet the deadline. It is also a stressful time for teachers. We all need a little breather! So, on the first day of every month, I host a "Mental Health Day" in my math classroom every period. During Mental Health Day, students in my math class put away their phones, enjoy a snack, and pick from a variety of activities spread around the room. They can journal, write a thank you note, play sudoku, color, draw, read for fun, play cards with friends, or work on a jigsaw puzzle. I dim the lights, play some light music, and allow students to decompress and enjoy one another. It is such a magical time.

I ordered fancy Sharpies and coloring books because let's face it, my dried-up Sharpies are 6 years old and my coloring books are hand-me-downs from thrift stores.

I ordered all the fancy snacks because I love to give students a wide variety of snacks that might encourage them to try something new. It is nice to be able to present something shiny and new to my students for a change. I also ordered some folders and notebooks because on a related note, sometimes, helping a student organize their very messy backpack or binder helps EVERYONE'S mental health!
