My Project

We are creating a mobile "math storytelling studio" to be shared among the early childhood classrooms in our school. The math studio will help students use stories as a way to investigate math concepts.

Math storytelling provides students a culturally relevant and engaging opportunity to connect mathematics to their lives and the world around them.

It also provides context based upon student interests for math concepts to be practiced and explored. When children pose problems for themselves as they engage in play, it leads to the creation of problems they care about, understand and are eager to solve.

We intend to provide students with a variety of high- interest materials that we can swap in and out to keep the play fresh and exciting. Items like toy animals, natural items, wooden people as well as sorting baskets will bring our math storytelling studio to life! With these objects, students can practice counting, combining, removing, comparing and creating equal groups. All of these are concepts critical to success in mathematics in early childhood and beyond. Students' math storytelling will also improve their spacial reasoning, critical thinking skills and positional language, which are especially important for our English language learners.
