My Students

My students are excited to be at school! They greet me at the door wanting to know what they will be learning that day and what can they do to help me. They have fantastically creative ideas about everything from writing a narrative, to developing their own algorithm, to how things should work in the world. The majority of my students are enthusiastic learners and are nurturing helpers to those that are the more hesitant learners.

On any given day, when a person walks in our room they feel the positive energy.

The students are bursting with curiosity and eager for a challenge.

My Project

Giving my students access to effective math, STEM, and coding manipulatives is essential in building strong a strong foundation for my students' future. Mathematically speaking, third grade students are expected to solve problems in three ways: models, writing, and algorithms. The magnetic white boards will give them an opportunity to problem solve with peers and try multiple methods to solving problems effectively. Magnetic place value blocks will be an extremely valuable tool in collaborative learning and lay the foundation in verbalizing their rationale and their thinking about math. It will allow them to show and justify their thinking for a variety of mathematical standards. Students are expected to use base ten models to justify place in rounding, addition and subtraction. The magnetic base 10 blocks can be used to lay a foundational understanding in multiplication and division as well, and will be a valuable part of mathematical instruction throughout the year. In addition to magnetic boards and and base 10 blocks, I requested storage for these essential materials in the form of seat pockets. This will make it so these supplies will be readily available to the students. The STEM kits will engage my students in higher level thinking skills and inspire them to solve problems in creative ways. My students will be learning about magnetism, and chain reactions which involves the study of energy, (force, actions, reactions , gravity). These are two of our third grade NGSS Standards. The coding materials will strengthen their technology knowledge base and embolden their imaginations to future possibilities. Because each student has their own class computer, it is possible to introduce the new coding concepts and terminology. The coding book set explores different topics and shows how coding is used for everything from animation to games.
