My Students

Traditionally, we have to teach a math skill to introduce a new concept to our students. However, finding quality hands on math centers can be time consuming and costly. One of the biggest challenges is conquering number and operations skills including the skill "dreaded fractions".

Generally, when a student comes to me at the beginning of the year I have just one goal, show them how to "love learning".

I believe under this philosophy they can conquer any skill in life. Our students are coming from low income families where technology, TVs, video games have become the social norm. Through hands on math, students will succeed by manipulating difficult concepts to mastery. Math seems to be a generally difficult concept for many kids to master. I believe hands on math centers will alleviate some of their frustrations.

My Project

I had the privilege of working next to one of the most remarkable math teachers for many years. It is my goal to replicate her rotations in ways students can stay sustained at a task for 20 minutes while practicing a specific math skill. The materials provided in this grant would allow a spring board to these rotations on which we can build life long learners who aren't afraid of math, but rather enjoy a good math challenge. Students will use the Magformers to work directly with three dimensional shapes to break them into nets and discover the faces, vertices, and edges. The Versatiles help to create not only a hands on rotation for students, but also an easy self checking system that is fun and engaging.

Not only are students sometimes afraid of math, but over the years I have heard parents echo, "the math is just too hard".

First, I would love to help students overcome their fear of math then further their exploration by involving them in real world math centers they enjoy. When students can enjoy a subject it creates so much confidence within, they become excited about school and thereby creates success for their future.
