My Students

One quote that summarizes the work done in my special education fifth grade classroom in the Bronx is, "We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope," by Martin Luther King Jr.

My students are both special and general education fifth graders who attend a low-income, Title 1 school in the Bronx, New York.

They are a resilient bunch who are dedicated to proving their critics wrong and who have the ability to make me laugh everyday. They come to school everyday intent on learning what they need to be successful when they go on to middle school next year, and their career aspirations range from teacher, to singer, to doctor. Every child walks through the door and helps to create a classroom community that truly cares for each other and looks out for each other, putting aside their differences and any problems they may be experiencing at home. They are a lively bunch, questioning everything and teaching each other as well as me something new every day.

My Project

With the supplies I am requesting, my students will be able organize their classwork, homework, and projects in a way that will allow them to learn key organization skills as well as the importance of consistent routines. Currently, my classroom has limited storage space, and I only myself received a desk a few weeks ago. With these organization supplies, the classroom will look neater and brighter. Also, my classroom printer is currently missing 50% of its parts, so a new printer would allow me to make copies of anything we could need. With the math supplies I have requested my students will be able to immerse themselves in mathematical problem solving, a key component to this year's math state exam and an area in math my special education students struggle with significantly. By having a variety of math problem solving books on a variety of levels, every student in my class on every level will be able to access the problem solving content that is essential for their success.

This project is so important because the organization supplies will help to brighten a classroom that is housed in a building over one hundred years old.

A new printer is an essential piece of equipment that would allow me to copy or print anything needed for the classroom. The math problem solving materials will help me to target specific problem solving areas of need for each student, regardless of their level, hopefully helping to ensure their success on the state exam
