Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a school with an accelerated track for high achievers and a robust arts program including a steel pan band. The school admits students from across Brooklyn and Queens and serves grades 5 to 8. Most students arrive in 6th grade, but families concerned about competition for good middle schools may want to get a leg up by applying for fifth grade.

My students are motivated, self driven, and are always excited in learning mathematics on a daily basis.

The highest achievers are placed in an accelerated program after 6th grade, which includes honors classes in 7th grade and Regents courses in algebra and living environment in 8th grade.

My students are always out performing their peers in other classes based on the engaging, activity based, rich curriculum that fosters critical thinking and allow my students to use the inquiry approach to investigate math task given.

My Project

My school believes in student-centered learning and such we will be implementing a school-wide portfolio system beginning in the September 2018-2019 school year. These binders will be used to create portfolios that will include the following sections: assessments, checklists, reflections, rubrics, self-selected pieces, performance tasks, lab reports/ activities, arrangement of portfolios by units, goals created by students, opportunities for extra credit real life, real world, and current event connections. 

Math portfolios will serve to engage students in learning content and help students learn the skills of reflection and self-evaluation.

Math portfolios will also help students understand what quality work is; document student learning in areas that do not lend themselves to traditional assessment; and facilitate communication with parenting adults.
