This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6th grade math in a Title 1 school, in the heart of Long Island City, NY. Most of my kids come from low income families. They receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of them cannot afford the basic school supplies. My class is made up of 26 students who are either learning the English Language or have learning disabilities if not both. Most of their computational understanding is below grade level. Many don't know basic arithmetic facts. They are in 6th grade but some function on the 4th grade level. It is my responsibility to close that learning gap.

My Project

My 6th graders are very remarkable. Half of my students are learning English, ( five of them speak no English at all) and the other half has learning disabilities. They are creative, energetic and curious. They don't learn through traditional methods. They need motivation to spark their imagination.

There are days they spend nearly 3 hours in my classroom.

They become bored and restless. They need constant stimulation to keep them focused and engaged. Many of them don't even know the multiplication table and simple math concepts. We need flashcards, and games like Multiplication and Division Tower and Math playing cards which will allow them to have fun while giving them the opportunity to practice math skills. They will allow them to develop number sense and help improve their reasoning skills. These games will help my students look forward to spending hours in my classroom. My kids are also artistic. They want to display their hard work. We would love to have coloring pencils and markers so they can be creative showcase their work. My classroom desperately needs an area where kids can solve and work on problems together and a dry erase board will allow them to do just that. Your donation will be greatly appreciated.
