This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second graders will continue their learning adventure in the center of a small urban district. Our school is a Title One school with approximately seven hundred students in grades K-5. The student body has a large percentage of English Learners. We have eighty-five percent minority students and over eighty percent percent free or reduced price lunch population. Within this challenge is strength and determination, as our school strives to close the achievement gap while growing confident and successful learners.

Second grade is still setting the foundation for a lifetime of inquiry and a love for learning.

These little scholars are at an age when everything is still new and exciting and their quest to know "how?" and "why?" makes each day a joy to experience. I strive to provide them with experiences that will not only ignite a passion to wonder and question, but will also give them the skills to find the answers they seek.

My Project

A mathematical fluency kit will help my second graders increase their math thinking and problem solving. Students who are fluent thinkers are able to apply that knowledge in a variety of circumstances without being bogged down with basic computation and place value speed bumps.

The more opportunities my students have to build this foundational knowledge, the greater their chances of success now, and in the future.

The majority of my scholars are below grade level and the main reason is a lack of fluency in basic skills. They are unable to access the foundational knowledge required to solve higher level problems. This project will provide them with the materials to increase fluency, thinking and success!
