Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a low economic school and services many communities within it's walls. My goal for this project is to get students from the "I can't do Math" to a "I am good at Math and I understand it better" mindset. I want to give the students an opportunity to have as many hands on and students led discussions in my classroom. My kids are special to me and many come from a low income household. I want to give them the opportunity of learning in a safe and uplifting space without fear of criticism or afraid to make mistakes.
I am asking for the base 10 blocks to help more students in small groups with place value, decimal place value, and number understanding.
I have 1 set now that I use to work with my students that have learning difficulties but that 1 set does not give them the opportunity to work on their own with their own set of blocks. They need that experience of using them on their own to make the math connection.
I will use the dry erase posters daily as our math program has students work on their math problem solving skills using problems with numeric information but also using non-curriculum based problem solving questions. These posters also help students work cooperatively in solving problems and gives them the opportunity to discuss different strategies to solve a problem or situation.
The headphones will be used for test taking days as well as mathematical videos presented to students to help in their understanding of math concepts. I will also share these headphones with other grade level teachers if they need them for a short period of time.
