My Students

My math students are energetic and full of creativity. The enjoy solving problems using creative means. They also seek to explore creativity through other means than traditional artistic needs. Our students love to learn and engage in social learning experiences.

They are extremely curious about technology and the impact it can have on their futures.

Recently many of my students have become interested in coding and programming. They love sharing what they have completed through various free education programming sites. My students live in a rural area traditionally populated by families of manufacturing and farming backgrounds. These students have a limited exposure to coding, programming, and robotics activities.

I would like to provide my students the opportunity to explore problem solving through programming and robotics, with a mathematical context. Students enjoy sharing and viewing others projects, problem solving processes, and comparing results. I am aiming at creating a math focused maker space so students can explore mathematical ideas through other means.

My Project

The materials for this project are going to be used to integrate coding and computer programming into my mathematics curriculum. My students are intrigued by technology, I want to link technology with solving math problems in every way possible. With the Dash and Dot robots, students will be able to write code on their devices that program the robots. The apps to program Dash and Dot are compatible with iOS, Android, and Windows devices. Students will be able to use Scratch based coding to work with the robots.

Students need to solve math problems in rich and meaningful activities, integrating coding and robotics into activities, will accomplish this.

Students will use the robots to solve problems, puzzles, or inquiry activities. Students will need to engage in critical thinking, problem solving, and mathematical thinking to create the code and direct the robots. When students learn how to address problems in different manners, through non-traditional processes, their understanding of the content is deepened. Students are also more engaged and motivated when activities are interesting and speak to their personal interests.

I would like to provide my students with the ability to learn how to problem solve through coding. This project will help accomplish that goal. Join us as we embark on our new learning experiences!
