Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

September 2006 will begin my eighth year teaching at this low-income, working-class and highly motivated community in the Bronx. Happily, I am going up to fourth grade with my third graders, and have spent much of my summer planning. However, as I go over the fourth grade mathematics curriculum guide, I realize that it is a much more involved and demanding program. I also realize that because I've been teaching third grade for the past 6 years, my classroom lacks the materials that would be compatible with the more demanding fourth grade curriculum. My math centers now consist of whatever I have been able to scrape together from previous years, and donations I've been able to obtain from my colleagues. In September of last year, one of our first math projects was to create and complete a bar graph. The students “brainstormed” activities of daily living and how often they performed these activities. Activities included: brushing teeth, watching TV, reading, playing video games, eating breakfast, days late for class, etc. These activities were tallied for daily and weekly performance. Each student selected 5 activities to place on his or her bar graph - complete with labels and a title. Children decided on an individual basis whether or not to count in increments of 2, 5, or 10. At the end of this project, students compared their least-performed activity with their most performed activity. Finally, they were required to find the “difference” between the two, then explain and/or show how they arrived at their answers. This year, our task(s) will be a bit more daunting, given the added fact that the state standardized fourth grade mathematics test is in late February. This is one of two standardized tests that determine whether or not a child is promoted to the next grade. The test will focus primarily on geometry, graphing, measurement and probability. At the moment, I have few resources to support the proper hands-on exploration of these particular areas of math. To assist my kids with performing their best, not only for the test, but at all times, our classroom must have a math makeover!! My plan is to set up 4 centers in the math area, where groups of children would work simultaneously for 10 minutes. At the end of 10 minutes a buzzer would sound, signaling a rotation to the next exciting and inviting math “adventure” (center). This would go on until each child had participated at all 4 centers. Writing about the center experience would be a requirement, and they would respond appropriately in their math journals. In addition to our regular math lessons and independent work, I am certain that implementing this “ritual” 2 – 3 times a week, will: build test-taking confidence and stamina, focus on curriculum standards, reinforce and/or build upon previously taught lessons and strategies; and allow for the extensive “hands-on” experience that my students so desperately need and want. My kids are gradually coming to the realization that mathematics is and will continue to be an essential and necessary part of their everyday lives. Our motto this year and every year is Math Matters!
