Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an enthusiastic group of children who come from a variety of socioeconomic situations and special needs. Students often bring issues from home into school which affects their learning. My classroom is a safe environment where students can work with each other to fulfill their potential.

What makes my students unique is their individual backgrounds and experiences that they bring to the classroom.

They require intense small group and independent instruction to heighten their learning experience. I intend to provide a safe and comfortable environment for all students to not only increase their understanding and retention of academic content, but to also increase their engagement in school.

My Project

Many of my students struggle to learn math using a workbook and a pencil. They become very discouraged and immediately want to give up. However, when my students are exposed to hands-on materials during mathematics lessons they begin to understand math is not as "scary" as it seems.

Why do hands-on materials work for students who struggle with math?

Hands-on materials allow students to construct their own cognitive models for abstract mathematical ideas and processes. In addition, manipulatives increases their engagement and interest. Manipulatives like the ten-frames and the number line slider boards are also a powerful assessment tool for teachers. These materials would be available for all students every moment of the day. Hands-on learning provides students with powerful and engaging learning experiences in mathematics. Let's turn their frowns upside down with math manipulatives!
