My Project

I work as a math specialist who works with students in the classroom and in a small group setting. My students learn best when they have hands-on materials and games. I have found that my students learn best when they are able to interact with the manipulatives and collaborate with a partner or group. I have also found my students are able to create their own rules when noticing patterns that occur in games. In many classrooms, we are missing the essential tools, like tangrams and pattern blocks, to allow for students to engage in mathematics. Ever since the pandemic, I have noticed geometry to be a weakness for many students. This results in me creating paper copies of these tools for students.

These tools will help the students experience the shapes and their attributes and reinforce the missing academic vocabulary.

The tools such as dry-erase markers, erasers, cleaners, and plastic sleeves will allow students to solve math problems in a way that allows them to change their answers. This will support students' perception of math as they will understand that it is okay to make mistakes and we will learn from our mistakes.

Finally, the students love smelly stickers. The reward of a smelly sticker after a math group has been motivating for students at all grade levels. The smelly stickers and sticker charts will reinforce the effort students are putting forth even when the concepts are complex.
